PEKIN (25News Now) – Pekin is said to have a rich German and Swiss history, and on Sunday, the city hosted the annual Springfest to share good food and beer, along with other traditions.
The German American Central Society organized Springfest, also known as Frühlingsfest, at Avanti’s Event Center.
The menu included the Über Schnitzel sandwich with pork, sauteed onions and Gouda or Swiss Cheese on a bun. There was also bratwurst, frankfurters (hotdogs), German potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, Bavarian pretzels, dessert, and of course there was German beer.
Festival goers could also see a display of German cars and listen to Grammy Award-nominated Polka artist Eddie Korosa Jr.
Some 500 to 600 people were expected.
“Springfest is something unique we can do here in Pekin; it is German-Swiss themed. We’re happy to kick something off in the spring when we’re not quite as busy in the fall,” said said Jeff Pulfer, the publicity manager.
The organization now gets ready for Maifest, which is on May 4.
