‘SNL’ hilariously captures parents’ real-life struggle with their ‘Goth Kid on Vacation’

With spring break on the horizon for many, “Saturday Night Live” imagined life as a goth kid on a family vacation in a new sketch.

Jack Black hosted the late-night sketch comedy show on Saturday, April 5 for the fourth time, alongside musical guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile.

During the episode, Black appeared in a pre-recorded sketch alongside cast members Michael Longfellow, Heidi Gardner and James Austin Johnson, who portrayed a family on vacation. The sketch also starred Ego Nwodim and Kenan Thompson as a reggae duo who performed a song about, well, goth kids going to warm weather destinations with their family.

Thompson and Nwodim got the sketch started with a musical number, trading off lines about their home country.

“This island is our home,” Thompson sang, before Nwodim added the next line, “Blessed by Jah, so much beauty to behold.”

Thompson added, “But when there is war and struggle and pain,” with Nwodim finishing the line, “How do we fill our souls with joy again?”

The tune transitioned into the catchy chorus, with the duo repeatedly singing, “We look and we laugh at goth kid on vacation.”

Viewers got a first look at the family in question, which featured Gardner and Johnson donning their brightly colored vacation ensembles. Then, there was their son.

Longfellow was decked out in a head-to-toe black outfit, including a spiked choker, leather jacket, and plenty of eyeliner, while his hair was an asymmetrical style, covering one of his eyes.

He tried his best to enjoy the vacation at first, slathering on sunscreen with mesh gloves on to his exposed wrists and laying down on a hammock before the chain on his jeans got stuck.

He briefly seemed content while playing the card game Magic: The Gathering, but later yelled out in anger when he was hit in the head by an inflatable ball on the beach while he painted his nails.

“He no wear bathing suit, he wear big, black jeans,” Thompson sang. “He wear no sandal, he got the combat boots on the beach.”

Nwodim continued the tune, adding, “He no want no jet ski, he no swim with the dolphin. He want sit in the hotel lobby, look at photos of his big-boned girlfriend.”

The sketch pivoted from the reggae duo when Black hit the scene, singing a spoof of My Chemical Romance’s song “Welcome to the Black Parade” dressed in the group’s black marching band ensembles.

“When I was a young boy, my parents took me down to Jamaica for my high school spring break,” Black sang, altering the beginning verse of the classic emo hit.

Longfellow tried his best to get his family to change their mind about their vacation stay, repeatedly telling them during breakfast that “going home sounds great.”

Gardner got sick of Longfellow’s complaining and snapped, yelling, “Dexter, maybe you should just go to the beach and write your poetry. Would that make you happy?”

Alas, Longfellow had a rebuttal ready, and murmured, “Happiness is a disease.”

“Life is misery for a goth kid on vacation,” Black sang to end the song out while Longfellow looked out of place waiting in a line to limbo. “My shirt is staying on!”

However, there is one activity that seemed to please Longfellow. As Black sang the line, “I do the zipline once,” Longfellow beamed as he flew through the air, but the feeling was short-lived as he was later spotted looking despondent while sitting on a rock at the beach.

“Please just take me home,” Black later pleaded, seemingly echoing Longfellow’s sentiments.
