PUTNAM COUNTY- Hundreds of residents of affluent Putnam County go to bed each night with hunger pains.
The United Way of Putnam-Westchester realizes this fact and working in conjunction with the Mid-Hudson Library System collected some 2,200 pounds of canned goods to support local food pantries while combating hunger in the Putnam-Westchester region.
Tom Gabriel, CEO of the United Way, said the initiative provided an “important opportunity to highlight the vital role of shelf-stable foods in supporting families facing economic challenges. With nearly 40 percent of households in our region falling below the ALICE–Asset-Limited, Income Constrained, Employed threshold, every can donated made a meaningful difference in our communities.”
Gabriel noted that the drive emphasized the “nutritional value of canned goods, dispelling myths about their health benefits. Canned foods provide essential nutrients, offer convenience, and have an extended shelf life, making them a crucial resource for families facing food insecurity.”
The CEO also commended groups of volunteers also assisted with the drive counting and sorting the donated items, which will be distributed this month to those in need by the Brewster Community Food Pantry and Saint John the Evangelist Food Pantry in Mahopac.
