DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – Saturday was a beautiful morning to get out and enjoy the weather.
An event in Decatur made it easy for people to do just that, while also spreading awareness of the plan to bring a zoo to North Alabama.
The 4th Annual North Alabama Zoological Society Kids Festival (NALZS) was held on the campus of Calhoun Community College Saturday afternoon.
For several years, the group has been trying to raise money to create a zoo for the area.
Just a few weeks ago, they released the results of a feasibility study, saying the zoo would create jobs and drive economic progress in the Athens, Decatur, and Huntsville area.
“We did our study, and the results were actually really amazing,” Executive Director of NALZ Ethan Woodruff said.
“The consulting firm that did it for us, they’re experts in the zoo industry, and they said there aren’t many places that are primed to have a new zoo, and Huntsville is very much primed to have a zoo, and it’s surprising that we don’t have a zoo.”
That study estimates a zoo in our area would draw between 350,000 to 400,000 visitors per year.
