Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

When the Nintendo Switch 2 was first announced earlier in the year, we got just he tiniest sneak peek at a new game in the Mario Kart series. With today’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event, we’ve finally got a full look at just what this game, named Mario Kart World, has in store.

The new trailer showcased some fantastic-looking original tracks that will all be hosted in one giant open world that players can navigate. The Classic Grand Prix mode is still there, but it now includes a new segment where all the racers will have to drive between each of the tracks. On top of this is a new Knockout Tour mode, which sees you race across larger stretches of the map, with players at the back of the pack being eliminated at each new milestone.

Races themselves have a bunch of new features too. First of all, you can now have up to 24 racers in a single race, double that of Mario Kart 8, and your karts are now much more agile, able to grind along rails and ledges that litter the racetracks alongside the ability to wall-ride. Of course, if you just want to explore the world – alone or with friends – that is also an option in the new Free Roam mode.

The game is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025 – the same day as the console. It will be available as a pack-in with the Switch 2, and we’ll be getting more details on the game at the Mario Kart World Direct on April 17, 2025 at 9am ET.
