Detroit’s pastry scene, Shinola’s Evening Bar get props from Food & Wine

This week, national culinary publication Food & Wine announced its Global Tastemakers Awards, and a few Detroit businesses were given accolades.

While Detroit wasn’t named one of the Top 10 United States cities for food and drink overall, it was named No. 10 on Food & Wine’s list for top U.S. cities for pastries.

“It’s America’s pastry renaissance, and our experts zeroed in on the crème de la crème. These are the best American cities for pastry,” writes Regan Stephens for Food & Wine. The blurb name-drops Sister Pie, New Palace Bakery, Avalon International and Warda Patisserie — all woman-owned businesses — for the reasons Detroit made the list.

“The West Village neighborhood gem is among a host of bakeshops that have made Motor City a haven for pastry lovers,” Stephens writes about Sister Pie. “Longtime favorites like New Palace Bakery keep the city stocked with beloved Polish classics, like its famous paczki. Avalon International Breads draws crowds for its rustic loaves and buttery pastries, and 2022 F&W Best New Chef Warda Bouguettaya is spinning magic at Warda Patisserie in the form of shakshuka morning buns and seasonal fruit tarts.”

(We’d also offer that Detroit’s Good Cakes and Bakes, Garden City’s Villa Bakery, Home Bakery in Rochester and many others also make Detroit a stand-out for this category.)

Also getting some love from Food & Wine’s Global Tastemakers Awards is the Evening Bar at the Shinola Hotel. It landed at No. 3 on the list of the country’s best 10 best hotel bars.

Food & Wine’s Brad Japhe describes the 30-seat bar as “dimly lit and devoid of windows” and praises the Evil Twin cocktail and the creative bar snacks.

“Its sleek, almost-spartan decor channels a low-key vibe from the early 20th century. But the selections here are decidedly modern: seasonally inspired cocktails anchored by artisanal spirits,” he writes.

Remember that the Evening Bar, 1400 Woodward in downtown Detroit, is currently hosting an immersive tiki experience called Model T-iki. The temporary concept started in February and will run through mid-April.

So what are the Top 10 U.S. cities for food and drink, according to Food & Wine? From one to 10: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin, New Orleans, Charleston, Miami, San Francisco, Houston and Philadelphia.
