More portal news for Notre Dame women’s basketball

Sophomore Emma Risch and freshman Kate Koval are the latest Notre Dame women’s basketball players to throw their hats into the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

Tuesday’s news follows the Monday night drop that had All-American guard Olivia Miles also entering the transfer portal, despite being projected as one of the top picks in the WNBA Draft on April 14.

Risch, a 6-1 guard out of Melbourne, Fla., has been hampered by a hip injury throughout her Irish career, playing in just seven games as a freshman and 13 games this past season. She averaged 5.7 points per game in 2024-25.

The 6-foot-5 Koval played in 32 games for the 28-6 Irish this season, starting in 10 of them, and led Notre Dame in blocked shots with 55. She averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds.. She was ranked as the No. 5 recruit nationally coming in.

With starters Maddy Westbeld, Liatu King, Sonia Citron, along with bench-force Liza Karlen all out of eligibility, the four scholarship players that can return are All-American guard Hannah Hidalgo, guard Cassandre Prosper, guard KK Bransford and post Kylee Watson. Bransford and Watson redshirted this past season.

Notre Dame’s season ended last Saturday in the Sweet 16 in Birmingham, Ala., with a 71-62 defeat to TCU. It was the fourth straight year that the Irish have been eliminated in the Sweet 16.
