More than Just Books: Kids enjoy storytime with pilots at Syracuse airport

Children from Fairmount recently experienced a unique storytime event at the local airport, where pilots read to them in full flight gear. Brenda Shea, director of the Fairmount Community Library, explained the initiative’s impact.

“It kind of makes something they heard about larger than life,” Shea said. “Books kind of make things magical to kids, and so we try to partner the concept of storytimes with field trips, and they can get up close and personal to people and places that they haven’t yet experienced, and it just opens up a whole new world for them.”

The annual field trip, now a tradition, includes storytime with songs, crafts, and snacks. Shea noted the airport’s generosity in providing each child with a free book. “We put on a storytime with songs, and a little craft, and a snack, and then the airport was generous enough to give them all a free book,” she said. “And now it is a tradition, we do it annually.”

Shea highlighted the excitement for young children, particularly those of preschool age, who often experience the thrill of seeing airplanes up close for the first time. “Young children, preschool age, love airplanes, and being at the airport, often it is their first time, so it is really exciting for them to see airplanes up close,” Shea said.

In addition to the storytime event, the airport offers a “reading runway” where families can pick up a book to enjoy during their travels. “We want to highlight that space, so that all families know if they are travelling, they can go into the reading runway and grab a book, and tuck it in their bag and get right on the plane,” Shea said.
