Local restaurants face closures as inflation spikes food and rent costs

High food prices are taking a toll on local restaurants. Two local restaurant owners say they’re struggling due to high inflation.

At Mad Pecker Brewing Company, it’s a bittersweet weekend as they celebrate their 10-year anniversary and their going out of business celebration. The owner Jason Gonzales says their last day open is Mar. 31.

“Inflation has been one of those things,” Gonzales said. “The cost, not just from the kitchen, ingredients, brewing ingredients. Even interest has been a thing we have to fight towards, and fight through.

Another business feeling the effects of high food cost is Nick’s Tacos and Catering. The owner Regina Flores says they are struggling to keep their doors open.

“The price of meat has increased,” Flores said. “Brisket before was a pound of brisket for $20. Now you’re paying $40 to $50 for a thing of brisket.”

According to the Consumer Price Index the price of food rose .3 percent in February. Flores says the upward cost of food is not the only obstacle they are facing. The restaurant owner says their rent doubled in October.

“It was $2,000, and now it went up to $4,000,” Flores said.

The struggling restaurant is months behind on their rent and they are asking for the community to come enjoy and authentic Mexican meal.

“Try us out,” Flores said. “Keep our doors open.”

Nick’s Tacos and Catering is located at 606 New Laredo Hwy.
