It takes a staff of dedicated journalists to bring you the news from around Central Indiana. In this feature, the Indianapolis Star introduces readers to our newsroom staff — or, rather, we let them introduce themselves. Up this week is Matthew Glenesk.
What’s your job title?
Deputy sports editor, overseeing Pacers, Fever and high schools coverage.
When did you join IndyStar?
I started in 2005 as a Pulliam Fellow, then came back full-time in 2009.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Brainstorming with writers; a good 30-minute chat could produce a dozen unique story ideas. And then helping make sure our staff’s great storytelling gets in front of as many eyes as possible. I love a strong headline.
Why journalism?
I wasn’t good enough at actually playing sports.
What’s your favorite Indy area restaurant or hidden gem?
Ale Emporium for the Hermanaki wings. … Hidden gem: Chiba in Westfield. Consistently the best sushi in Central Indiana. Cool vibe in the summer, too.
What do you do to unwind from a job that can be stressful?
Build LEGO with my son or play Barbie with my daughter.
(If both the kids are on their iPads, then grill with a cold beer in hand.)
What are you reading or streaming?
I read all day, so I don’t do much of that unless I’m on vacation. I listen to a lot of podcasts. “The Rest Is History” is in heavy rotation. Just finished one on disgraced King Leopold II of Belgium. So yeah, I’m a nerd.
What’s your favorite quote?
“I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.” — George Bernard Shaw
(I remind myself of this when social media trolls start barking.)
Do you prefer dogs or cats?
Dogs. I’m militantly anti-cat.
What’s your bucket-list vacation destination?
Malta. Good mix of history, great beaches and Mediterranean vibe. If I could go back to any place I’ve already been to: Croatia. Go to Croatia.
What’s your favorite sport and team?
Soccer and Tottenham Hotspur, which it’s been written of: “Tottenham is the worst kind of bad team, because they’re almost good. … They make you hope. So you go on loving them, and they carry on finding more and more innovative ways of disappointing you.”
What’s your favorite comfort food?
Gummy bears
