Bills aiming to legalize sports betting move to Oklahoma State Senate

The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed two bills that would legalize sports betting and enhance the state’s gaming compact with tribal partners.

Rep. Ken Luttrell, R-Ponca City, authored House Bill 1047, which would authorize sports betting in Oklahoma. It would also maintain current funding levels to the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for compulsive gambling treatment.

The bill also contains provisions for tribes entering into gaming compacts to accept the state’s offer for sports betting.

Another bill, House Bill 1101, was also authored by Rep. Luttrell. This would establish a voter referendum to approve sports betting if House Bill 1047 doesn’t become law.

In a press release, Rep. Luttrell argued legalizing sports betting would bring revenue to the state, saying “Oklahoma will benefit from those funds, which will help strengthen our economy and provide additional resources for critical services,” while securing funding for existing mental health services.

Now that both bills passed the House, they’re on their way to the Senate for consideration.
