International video game tournament coming to Kalihi

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Donkey Kong, Super Mario and all their friends (and enemies) will soon converge on Kalihi.

The first ever Honolulu International Gaming Tournament is coming to Farrington High School March 29.

About 150 competitors from across the state and South Korea will battle in Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch.

The tournament will take place from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, members of the Honolulu City Council welcomed nine students from the University of Utah’s Asia Campus (UAC), who will be competing.

“As Hawaii’s first international eSports tournament, this event showcases the power of eSports to inspire students, create career pathways in technology, and connect players from diverse backgrounds,” Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke said.

UAC’s assistant director of International Admissions, Ben Voegele, said the university is “excited to be bringing some of their top gamers to Hawaii.”

“Gamers from our Asia Campus will be on hand to compete in the tournament and discuss their own personal experiences of living and studying in South Korea while earning an American degree,” Voegele said.

Prizes include bragging rights and $1,000 in gift cards from Zippy’s and Dominos.
