I ate eggrolls from the new Bennets Eggrolls food truck

The newest Champaign-Urbana food truck is Bennets Eggrolls. The hot pink trailer offers a menu of savory egg rolls, dessert egg rolls, loaded fries, and smashburgers.

Take a look at the full menu.

Last week, I saw the new food truck parked in the lot of Home Depot and stopped by to try some egg rolls. After I paid, they gave me a number which I took to my vehicle because it was cold and windy.

There were other orders ahead of me, so my food took a bit of time, about 20 minutes, before it was ready. I ordered four rolls: pizza ($4), Philly ($4), veggie ($3), and jerk chicken ($4).

These all came fresh from the fryer and were quite big. Totally unmarked, each egg roll was a sort of flavor roulette. The Philly one had thinly sliced beef, cooked onions and bell peppers, and melty provolone that served a satisfying cheese pull. The pizza one was filled with melted cheese and lots of pepperoni but no sauce, so it tasted somewhere between a pepperoni wrap and a calzone. The veggie one had unseasoned raw cabbage and was a little underwhelming, but the jerk chicken and cheese one woke my mouth up! The crispy roll’s tender pulled chicken had an intensely spicy jerk flavor and a nice crispy crunch to the wrapper. A handwritten menu item affixed to the printed menu with painter’s tape, this jerk chicken egg roll was probably my favorite though I would have preferred it with less cheese.

The new Bennets Eggrolls truck does not seem to have a set schedule. They do catering and events, and sometimes on Sundays, the truck has a dinner special of chicken, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and greens with a dessert of banana pudding.

Keep any eye on their Facebook page for the most up-to-date information on location and times for where to find the new truck.
