Hays County Pet Resource Center teams up with food bank to provide food to those in need

The Central Texas Food Bank and Hays County Pet Resource Center held their first drive-up food distribution event of the year for people and pets in need Saturday morning. The event took place at McCormick Middle School in Buda.

Anyone in Hays County was allowed to attend, and pets did not need to be present to receive pet food.

This event was the 5th pet food distribution event held in Buda. “I’ve always believed in consistency,” said Hays County Commissioner for Precinct 2 Michelle Cohen. “The more regular distribution events that we have, the more people start finding out about it, the more people start coming.”

Last year, Central Texas Food Bank and Hays County PRC held four quarterly events that collectively served over 1,500 pets in need of food assistance. According to Cohen, people struggling with food insecurity often have to make the tough decision between providing food for their families or for their pet.

“As a county, we really try and focus on trying to keep the pets with their family,” Cohen said. “By hosting the pet food distribution, that lessens that burden for them hopefully. to make them get through the next month.”
