Las Cruces, New Mexico, is grappling with the aftermath of a deadly mass shooting that occurred at Young Park during an unauthorized car show last Friday night. The incident has left the community shaken as the tally of mass shootings in the nation continues to rise, marking this as the 53rd such event in 2025 alone.
According to CBS News, two suspects, 20-year-old Tomas Rivas and a 17-year-old boy, have been arrested and charged with three open counts of murder connected to the shooting, which claimed the lives of three teenagers and injured at least 15 others. Police have identified the deceased victims as Andrew Madrid, 16; Jason Gomez, 13; and Dominick Estrada, 19. The suspects are being held without bond as of this morning, with Rivas at the Dona Ana County Detention Center and the juvenile at a detention facility for minors.
Amidst the chaos and the sound of gunfire that erupted at approximately 10 p.m., police responded to find a scene marred by tragedy, where, as per KTSM, the surviving victims’ ages ranged from 16 to 36, consisting of nine men and six women. The shootings have resulted in a surge of patients to local hospitals and regional trauma centers spanning Las Cruces and El Paso.
The authorities, including Las Cruces Police, New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, continue their investigation and actively collect evidence from the scene. While Young Park remains closed, and nearby roads are also shut to traffic, the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico has set up a fundraising initiative with details available for those who wish to help the victims and their families weather the storm of this tragedy.
