Lobster rolls, chicken, sno-ball stands coming to Uptown riverfront near Audubon Park

Having a picnic this spring just got easier for people chilling by the river in Uptown.

The Batture, a riverfront development project near Audubon Park, is hosting food pop-ups on Friday to Sunday leading up to Memorial Day, starting March 22.

Nell Shell, Imperial Woodpecker and Bootsy’s Chicken will serve lobster rolls, sno-balls and chicken dishes at the riverfront property.

Nell Shell recently finished a residency stint at Imperial Woodpecker’s sno-ball stand. Owner Mary Nell started the concept with her business partner Chris Otten in 2024 after years of catering.

The Nell Shell shared on Instagram that it held a private event at the Batture in December, and it went well enough to lead to this spring location for the pop-up.

“Everyone laughed, loved and ate lobster. The vibe was truly unmatched,” the business said on Instagram.

The lobster roll business still plans to return to the Imperial Woodpecker stand after sno-ball season. But for now, the sno-ball stand near the corner of Aline Street and Magazine Street serves its ice-cold treats and prepares for this spring-time river pop-up.

Bootsy’s Chicken is the third food vendor at the Batture location. The food vendor is a new concept from the team behind Blue Oak BBQ.

The food will be served starting at 11 a.m. and will continue until sunset, according to the Batture.

To celebrate the first weekend, Body Shoppe and Vibrant Market will offer a free pilates class and matcha for people who come out to the Batture at 10 a.m.

The mainstay vendors are slated to be Nell Shell, Imperial Woodpecker and Bootsy’s Chicken, but The Batture said there will be special guests on the riverfront throughout the season.

The Batture is a development project that has been navigating the permit process to become an entertainment district at the site of the former industrial scrapyard. The project also faces concerns from neighbors about traffic and noise levels.

In October, the project introduced a co-working space on the site, and at that time, the owners said they would continue introducing amenities in a way that would fit with the neighborhood.
