New Pokémon TCG Pocket expansion coming next week with Shiny Pokémon

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

An all-new expansion is coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket next week, hot on the heels of the last surprise expansion release, Triumphant Light, which was announced and released on Pokémon Day last month.

The Pokémon Company has revealed Shining Revelry for Pokémon TCG Pocket, a new limited expansion set to be released next week. Shining Revelry, which will be released on March 27, 2025, will usher in a new type of Pokémon card: Shiny Pokémon. Shiny Pokémon are extremely rare alternately colored Pokémon that have been a mainstay in the video game series since the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, and have made multiple appearances in the physical Pokémon TCG throughout the years.

Shiny Pokémon cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket will be an additional type of alternate artwork cards, in addition to full art illustration rare cards and immersive rares, and they will use a separate rarity system from non-Shiny variants. They will have a special visual effect to them, with The Pokémon Company saying they “sparkle beautifully,” but will otherwise be identical in function to their non-Shiny counterparts.

Shining Revelry will also introduce a number of Pokémon and Trainer cards based on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, with Pokémon like Sprigatito and Tatsugiri and trainers like Iono set to make an appearance in the set. It will consist of just one booster pack, like other limited expansion sets, which means we can expect it to have around 70 cards, give or take.

In addition to the new expansion, next week’s update to Pokémon TCG Pocket will also bring with it a long-awaited feature in Ranked Matches, where players will be able to compete against others with similar skill levels. This will be broken up into seasons, with the first season running from March 27 to April 26, 2025, and players will be able to earn an emblem based on their rank at the end of the season.
