Shamrock story time draws kids to John Tomay Library in Georgetown

Photosynthesis, pom-poms and Skittles made Shamrock Story Time at John Tomay Memorial Library in Georgetown a great place to be on a snowy and cold day.

At least five families with eight kids ranging from 2 weeks to 5 years old listened attentively as Clear Creek County Library District Programs Coordinator Holly Grant read “Baby Loves Photosynthesis on St. Patrick’s Day” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Rainbow Colors.”

Keeping with the rainbow and colors theme, kids enjoyed a lively, color-matching challenge using pom-poms.

The activity aimed at helping children  learn colors and develop fine-motor movement, according to Grant.

“The library means community to me; it has been a place of learning, fun, memories and growth for myself and my children,” Kayla Geiger said while watching her two children, Jack and Harvey, play.

A circle of Skittles candy was placed on a plate as hot water was poured onto them and the children watched as the candy colors swirled into the water, like a magical tie-dye rainbow.

The library provided unsoaked Skittles for a snack as well.

The Library District’s storytime mascot rabbit, Miss Honeybun, also entertained the kids and helped Grant with the reading portion of the morning March 14.

“Storytime at the library is such a joy! Miss Honeybunn and I love connecting with local families and supporting literacy through fun and play,” Grant said.

When asked their favorite part of today’s storytime 3-year-old Zack Christoffersen announced “sugar time!” while 4-year-old Wes Fletcher decided “playing with pom-poms,” was his favorite part of the day.

Whatever the favorite was, the morning was filled with smiles and laughter from kids and parents alike.

“I love storytime because it’s so consistent for these kids to have. The library provides such a safe space – it’s so comforting,” Michael Fagrelius said with his toddler and infant close by.

The Clear Creek Library District offers storytime with Miss Honeybun at 10 a.m. every Friday  typically at the Idaho Springs Library at 219 14th Ave. or the John Tomay Memorial Library at 605 Sixth St., Georgetown in Georgetown.

The schedule and locations are available on their website atwww.cccld.org.

”The library is where I met my mom’s friends and my son Jack took some of his first steps. Now Harvey, my youngest son, joins and we get to experience the fun all over again,” Geiger said.
