Bataan Memorial Death March
The 36th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March takes place at White Sands Missile Range at 7 a.m., honoring the tens of thousands of U.S. and Filipino soldiers — among them members of the 200th Coast Artillery, New Mexico National Guard — who were forced to march 65 miles under inhumane conditions to confinement camps through the jungle in World War II. This became known as the Bataan Death March. Approximately 10,000 men died; 1,000 were American and 9,000 were Filipino. The memorial march covers about 26 miles with water stations. Jarabe Mexicano concert
Jarabe Mexicano concert takes place at 7 p.m. at the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts, 1110 New York Ave. It captures the nostalgic spirit of their border roots with their brand of “Bordeño-Soul,” which honors the musical tastes and cultural influences of its members. Jarabe, which translates to “concoction,” highlights the eclectic mix of genres they perform, ranging from Mexican folk, rock ‘n’ roll and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin rock, Trio Romántico, and popular Cumbia. Their traditional mariachi string instruments and Norteño-inspired drums complement dramatic vocals in English, Spanish and “Spanglish,” and it shows how this multi-generational ensemble embraces change while still honoring the past.
