FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Community Harvest Food Bank was presented on Wednesday with a check for nearly $80,000.
It came from the United Way of Allen County, who made the donation in honor of the late Maurice and Germain O’Daniel of Fort Wayne and their contributions to the community.
Greg O’Daniel of the O’Daniel Automotive Group says his parents were very active philanthropists.
“In their passing, they had left a specific fund that we distributed amongst four different organizations. One of them was the United Way, with an intention to provide this money for the food bank as well,” he said.
President and CEO of the Community Harvest Food Bank, Carmen Cumberland, says their distribution has gone up by 30% since the COVID-19 pandemic, and that a donation of this size is crucial in allowing them to keep up with the increased demand.
“Anybody that lives in this community, we help each other. And again, 320 thousand meals is what this donation equates to, so I would have to say it’s a pretty good day at the food bank,” Cumberland said.
