Prosthetics in Fashion: 25 Years of Transforming Beauty Standards on the Runway [PHOTOS]

Prosthetics debuted on the runway in 1999 during Alexander McQueen’s No.13 spring collection. For the show, McQueen collaborated with Paralympic athlete and double amputee Aimee Mullin. Mullin appeared in the show wearing a pair of wooden legs. Mullins’ appearance challenged traditional beauty standards.

Fashion continues to embrace inclusivity, with amputee models gracing the runway. From Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie to body modifications at Duran Lantink’s fall 2025 collection fashioned from materials like silicon and decorative metals, the designs inspire, provoke controversy and redefine aesthetics of beauty from head to toe.
