NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The recent end to a federal program that provided money to food banks is impacting some organizations in Charleston.
The United States Department of Agriculture has just cancelled the Local Food Purchase Assistance program, or LFPA, which provided money to allow food banks to purchase from local farmers and producers.
The Lowcountry Food Bank is seeing the effects as they purchase food from 13 different local farmers.
They are working to find alternate resources for funding, like through private resources, to make up for the funds that will be lost.
After these cuts, though, officials worry about cuts to programs, like the program that helps them serve over 3,000 senior citizens a month.
They say that, with the help of the community, they will work hard to find an alternate source of funding to continue the work that they do.
