SHERWOOD SHORES, Texas (KXII) – An EF-2 tornado tore through the small community of Sherwood Shores in 2022, but out of the rubble grew a rose.
The nearest grocery store is miles away in Whitesboro, so when residents were displaced by the damage without access to any of the essentials, there was only one place to go.
The Sherwood Shores Baptist Church started a food pantry just a few months before the tornado hit, something that’s become a rallying point for a tight knit community.
“It wasn’t just the pantry then. It was the whole church community that stepped up,” said Raquel Dennis, director of the food pantry. “A lot of people that I talked to say it would have been different. Several years ago, I don’t think we would have had the support like we do now.”
That support for the community was always there, but kicked into high gear after the deadly tornado struck.
“It’s been amazing,” said Sherwood Shores resident Treva Sanges. “[There are] so many people. The longer it goes, the more that learn about it. This place has just served the community so well since the tornado.”
“A lot of us out here don’t have means to get around and do anything, so they help us out with our food situation,” said Sherwood Shores resident June Douglas. “If there’s a problem with your family or something, they help you out. They’re just great people, they really are.”
That group of people is on a mission to serve.
{Dennis} “the big thing is people need to know your local church should be helping you. They should be taking care of you. It doesn’t matter what you look like or what you wear. We’re supposed to love everyone.”
Giving them hope, long after the storm clears.
