The Food Bank of Northern Nevada Spring Break Kids Café kicked off on Monday. The Kids Café is a partnership between FBNN and the USDA that helps feed kids free meals even when school is out of session.
FBNN knows that families rely on free and reduced school meals when school is in session, so during the breaks FBNN says it’s just as important to get those kids nutritious meals to stay healthy when they may not have access to them.
“You just have to show up, be a kid, and eat the meal there,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, Director of Marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. “There isn’t any paperwork to do or anything like that, so it really is a great way to get an extra meal or so during this break. Just show up and eat, that’s all you have to do during the time that we’re serving.”
The Food Bank says unfortunately, the turnout for the Kids Café is a little low, even though more than half of the kids qualify for the program.
Lantrip says they would love to see more kids take advantage of this free service.
She says “Even if a couple of meals would help you and your family with your budget please drop in and have one of these lunches.”
The Food Bank has recently increased the number of people they’re serving every single month. They’re now serving over 160,000 people every single month which is 5,000 more than in July of last year.
“We’re really trying to stay ahead of it, make sure we have enough food in the warehouse,” said Lantrip. “If families are needing other assistance there are things besides Kids Café, so please reach out if you need help with your food.”
