Food recalls, updates March 14: H-E-B dip, chocolate nut’s risk level set

A recalled spinach artichoke dip was given a Class II risk level by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), while recall updates have also been issued for chocolate nut and wafer snack products.

Why It Matters

According to the FDA, a Class II classification means: “A situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

What To Know

Presence of Metal

45 pounds of the H-E-B spinach artichoke dip, sold hot and in bulk for customer self service, was recalled last month due to the potential presence of metal.

The classification date was given as March 13.

A Class II recall is the FDA’s second-most serious risk level—with a Class III being the least serious and a Class I representing the most.

Undeclared Almonds

Meanwhile, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company LLC issued a voluntary recall on February 15, 2025, for one batch of its Mauna Loa Milk Chocolate Covered Macadamias snack (1oz) pouches due to the presence of undeclared almonds, which are known allergens.

This was designated a Class I risk level, the FDA said in an update.

Individuals with almond allergies risk serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product, a post on the FDA’s website warned.

The affected products were distributed to two retail locations in Southern California: World Market and Abraham & Sons, Inc.

They are packaged in 1 oz pouches, with UPC 0 72992 04260 3, lot number K4351, and a best-by date of July 2026, indicated on the back of the packaging.

No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported to date, the release said.

“The recall was initiated after Mauna Loa’s internal quality control identified that the affected batch, manufactured by a third-party co-manufacturer, contained undeclared almonds,” it read.

Consumers who have purchased the affected product and have an almond allergy are advised not to consume it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Undeclared Egg

Furthermore, a wafer product was given a Class I risk level by the FDA on March 13 due to undeclared egg.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, egg, or milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction,” read a release on the FDA’s site.

They were sold in six ounce plastic cylinders, with six per case and a UPC code of 8690766086473.

It was among a group of Ulker products from ZB Importing LLC affected by the recall.

According to the FDA, a Class I classification represents “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Products also affected by this recall included snack rolls and biscuits.

Newsweek has contacted companies associated with the aforementioned products for comment.
