The University of Texas’ athletic department self-reported five people for NCAA violations related to impermissible sports gambling last year, according to a report from the Austin American-Statesman.
The violations, which occurred between July 11 and Nov. 4 of 2024, were detailed in documents obtained by the American-Statesman via public records request. While names were redacted, the documents tied two football players, a student assistant, a non-student athlete with connections to the women’s tennis team and an uncategorized athletic department employee to the transgressions.
The report says that those five individuals placed nearly $15,000 in wagers which were in violation of NCAA rules stating that players, coaches and staff are not allowed to gamble on any sport in which the NCAA sponsors a championship.
While traditional sports bets are still illegal in Texas, the wagers were placed on a daily fantasy site which is legal in the state.
One of the implicated football players was ruled ineligible, but later reinstated. He was also required to pay out the value of his gambling winnings to a charity of his choice.
The other player is described as having a previous “problem” with sports wagering and sought parental help to quit, according to the report. He placed 67 impermissible wagers totaling about $9,600, including two on Texas basketball games. He was not penalized because he left the program and stopped playing college football.
The student assistant, who had placed wagers on Longhorns games, was terminated by the athletic department. The other two non-student athletes received warnings and additional sports betting education.
According to the report, the violations were identified by the athletic department using a wagering monitoring service called ProhiBet which has been mandated by the SEC since the 2023-2024 academic year. In total, about 100 sports wagering violations were reported to the NCAA in 2024, up from around 50 in 2023.
