MIAMI (WSVN) – Police said they have detained several people outside a local food market in Miami as part of a narcotics investigation.
The drug bust happened Wednesday at the Friendly Grocery & Food Market, located on the corner of Northwest 62nd Street and 17th Avenue, right across the street from Charles R. Drew K-8 Center.
City of Miami Police confirmed they served warrants for narcotics, and everyone inside the establishment was escorted out in handcuffs.
7Skyforce hovered above the food mart as several people sat on the floor in handcuffs outside the business, which was surrounded by SWAT trucks.
When asked if he knows what happened, a witness who identified himself as W.B. replied, “All we know if they came with demands and you saw [expletive] loading up, and it looked like gangs and [expletive] on the back of the truck.”
All of those handcuffed aren’t necessarily suspects, officials said, and through their investigation they will weed out those who are affiliated and make arrest accordingly.
Some of the ones who were initially handcuffed were later released.
The store remained cordoned off for hours as police removed electronic slot machines and other items. Officials haven’t specified why the machines were significant.
Witnesses said whatever illegal stuff was allegedly happening at the market occurred in a room in the back of the store.
“That’s in a private room, so I don’t know what goes on. But, you know, I always suspected, you know? Everybody sells weed at one point or another,” said Larry Carlin.
Carlin said he’s not sure why anyone would do that in the same store that serves the community food.
“Why would you have that in your business? Even if you pretend you don’t know?” he said. “You don’t know who you have if you let them hang around the store.”
Others weren’t surprised about what happened.
“It’s just [expletive] up. This store is doing great to this hood. It serves us food, meat and everything,” said W.B.
Drug possession, let along with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a school in Florida is treated as nothing less than a second-degree felony.
