Sporting News names Johni Broome National Player of the Year: Sears 1st Team All-American

The Sporting News got the ball rolling Wednesday on national awards for college hoops by naming Auburn’s Johni Broome its National Player of the Year. It was a historic moment for the Auburn program. Broome is the first player to garner a National Player of the Year Award. Broome has averaged 18.6 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game while leading the Tigers to a 27-4 record and a number one ranking in the AP Poll for eight straight weeks.

“It just shows the work I’ve put in,” Broome said at a press conference Wednesday morning. “It shows how my teammates have been committed to me and how my coaching staff has been committed to me, allowing me to make those plays and show off my skills.”

Broome, was, of course also named a first team All-American by the Sporting News. He’s joined on the first team by Alabama’s Mark Sears, who has averaged 19.6 points per game for the Tide so far this season. Also on the Sporting News first team are Duke freshman Cooper Flagg, Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. and Purdue’s Braden Knight.
