Mom Of 2 Kids Who Died At Detroit Casino Can Face Charges: Report

DETROIT — The mother of two kids who died from carbon monoxide poisoning last month while sleeping inside a van that was parked in a Detroit casino garage can face charges, according to a Fox 2 Detroit report.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will review the warrant and then determine whether to charge the mother in connection with the deaths.

Officials initially thought the two kids, ages 2 and 9, died from hypothermia after the van stopped running during the middle of the night on Feb. 10 in the Greektown Casino parking garage.

But autopsy reports from the medical examiner’s office actually showed the two kids died from carbon monoxide poisoning, though officials didn’t immediately say what went wrong with the van or what caused the carbon monoxide leak.

Officials said the mom noticed around noon that her 9-year-old son wasn’t breathing. While a family member took the boy to a nearby hospital, the family then noticed the 2-year-old girl was also not breathing and she was taken to a nearby hospital as well, according to officials.

Both kids were pronounced dead at the hospital, according to officials.

Four other children, along with their mother and grandmother, were also inside the van that night, officials said.

Those kids were taken to a nearby hospital where they appeared to be OK, officials said.

Officials believe the family was living in the van after a falling out with the family they had been living with.

The mom did reach out to the city’s homeless services multiple times, including as late as last November, and told them she and her five kids had nowhere to live, officials said.

Officials said that conversation fell-thorough and neither the family nor the city followed up after that November call.
