A Grow Your Own Food workshop and farmers market in Newport News

Want to grow your own food but have limited space?

The city of Newport News is having a Grow Your Own Food workshop, farmers market and container garden giveaway on Saturday at the Newport News Early Childhood Development Center.

The workshop will teach people how to grow food using containers such as cups, flowerpots and grow bags — a substitute for pots. Truth Bugg and Naysa Bugg of Truth Village Farms will teach the youth workshop, and representatives from the Virginia State University Small Farmers program will teach the adult workshop. Both are free to attend, but registration is required.

Workshop attendance is not required to shop at the farmers market or to participate in the plant giveaway. Everyone gets a free starter vegetable plant or seeds for vegetables, while supplies last. One plant per person.

The workshop runs from 10 to 11 a.m. (for ages 7 to 17) and 11 a.m. to noon (for people 18 and older). The farmers market and the plant and seed giveaway run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 1500 Jefferson Ave.
