Five things to do in Augusta: Gem show, Eagles tribute band, car show, symphony and more

Though there’s never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Augusta area, we’ve chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of March 7-9.

Each week, The Augusta Chronicle will publish a list of five options for things to do in the CSRA. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.

37th Annual Aiken-Augusta Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show

WHERE: Julian Smith Casino, 2200 Broad St., Augusta

WHEN: 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday; 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday,

DETAILS: The dealer’s market will feature crystals, minerals, fossils, gold and silver, fine and casual jewelry, loose gemstones and cabochons, meteorites and beads. Members of local gem, mineral and fossil societies will exhibit display cases, presenting lapidary art demonstrations, cutting open pick-your-own geodes on-site, hosting a treasure dig, and selling educational grab bags. Admission is $4 per adult and $6 for an adult weekend pass. Children 12 and younger enter free with adult admission. Admission and many items will be sold cash only. Some dealers will accept credit cards.

Camellia Fest: Learn the essentials of caring for plants

Where: Cold Creek Nurseries, 398 Hitchcock Parkway, Aiken

When: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday

Details: Learn the essentials about Camellias, Sasanquas, and hybrids, including planting, pruning, and addressing disease or insect issues at Camellia Fest. Paul Greenway beginning at 11 a.m. Local singer, guitarist, and songwriter Tim Barnett will perform and K.B. Deli & Bread Co. will be on site serving soups and sandwiches. The event is free. Motors for the Military

Where: Augusta University Summerville Campus, 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, on the Summerville Campus near the Douglas Barnard Amphitheater.

When: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday

Details: Shine up your car, truck, motorcycle, Jeep, or tractor and bring it to Augusta University’s Summerville campus in support of Augusta University’s military students. This family-friendly event will have music, food, a kids’ activity area, and a raffle. Prizes for Top Car, Top Truck, Top Motorcycle, Top Jeep, Top Tractor and Top 40. Eagles tribute band comes to Evans

Where: Jabez Hardin Auditorium at 7022 Evans Towne Center Blvd., Evans

When: Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The concert will be from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Details: Hotel California, a the original Eagles tribute band, will perform. Tickets are $48.95. Call 706-726-0366 for ticket information.

The Augusta Symphony performs

When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Where: The Miller Theater at 708 Broad St., Augusta.

Details: The Augusta Symphony perform Sounds of the Classics, which is part of the Piedmont Augusta Symphony Series. Symphony Series concerts showcase the orchestra performing masterworks by the greatest composers from history to today.
