The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has disbanded two food safety advisory committees, members told Reuters on Friday.
The move comes as President Donald Trump’s administration pushes to streamline federal agencies and reduce costs. According to the consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports, the USDA eliminated the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods and the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection.
Consumer Reports reported that these committees offered scientific guidance to the USDA and other federal agencies on food safety-related public health issues. The microbiological committee was disbanded following an executive order intended to streamline government operations, as outlined in a March 6 email from the USDA sent to committee members and reviewed by Reuters.
This is a developing news story and will be updated as more information is available.
