TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Town and Country Christian Church, with the help of Harvesters, put on the Northeast Kansas Mega Winter Food Distribution to provide Kansans nutritious, free meals on Thursday morning. The drive-through event occurred at the Kansas Neurological Institute and provided 30,000 pounds of fresh food to families in need.
“Four or 500 families are willing to stand in line, sometimes, you know, two or three hours just to get food,” said Kathy Deitering, the Volunteer Coordinator for Town and Country Christian Church.“They’re always grateful. It makes the job satisfaction very high because you know you’re appreciated. Many of them make sure at every single station they say, ‘Thank you so much. Thank you so much’.”
The need is always there, and many miss out when the distribution isn’t.
“I talked to the first person in line the next month who had been there since 2:00 in the morning, and she says, ‘You weren’t here last month. We haven’t had any food for the last three days.’ That tells you the kind of need that we fulfill,” said Deitering.
“It’s real good because we get to have food and drinks and stuff for the week and the month,” said Brandi Roose, a beneficiary of the event.
You can find a food distribution center near you with the Harvesters Food Locator tool.
