One Change That Will Make ‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ Look Way Less Bad

Don’t get me wrong, I love Monster Hunter Wilds for the most part but…its visuals are certainly lacking in many regards. Character creator faces are good, monsters and monster cutscenes are good. Everything else? Something feels off.

Now, that can be changed, at least on PC, with a new mod that fixes some of the visual muddiness and clarity. I found this via Maximillian Dood, and it’s the Disable Lens Distortion mod which makes the game look distinctly brighter and better, which you can see in the modified screenshot above.

It’s not exactly the most involved mod, as the description from creator SnakeyHips says:

“REFramework script which disables the use of lens distortion resulting in a sharper image. I’ve also disabled film grain but not sure this does anything. Although there are options to disable this within the game’s config.ini, changing that doesn’t seem to do anything so that’s why I looked into changing it via a script. Enjoy!”

The visuals and performance of Monster Hunter Wilds have been the subject of much debate, and its performance on PC specifically has resulted in a number of negative reviews as people want Capcom to work on optimization further. Unfortunately, you cannot get this mod on consoles, but I’ve also been told to reduce the scale of the last step of brightness settings, as it also makes the game more colorful. Strangely, for some reason, Monster Hunter Wilds is also supposed to start looking better when you get into High Rank hunts in the endgame. This may be from some sort of “seasonal” effect where the landscape and lushness changes, but I’m not sure if we can confirm that’s the definite reason.

Many believe the lingering problems with Monster Hunter Wilds exist because Capcom wanted to push the game out before the end of the fiscal year, which I can certainly believe. It does not seem to have cost them anything, however, as it is the fastest-selling game in Capcom history with 8 million copies moved in three days, and it’s currently rocking a 90 Metascore as the second-best-reviewed game of 2025.

There has been some level of controversy about other mods, namely a “health bar” mod extolled in a story by PC Gamer that went viral online, as players believe that is antithetical to the entire experience of hacking down monsters and using existing game clues to gauge their remaining strength. Others simply say “let others play how they want.”

As for this mod, it feels like a must have until Capcom fixes things themselves, but there’s no telling they actually will in this specific regard.
