CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — Lawmakers have signaled strong support for banning some preservatives and artificial food dyes in West Virginia.
House Bill 2354 would get rid of certain additives – including the preservatives butylated hydroxyanisole and propylparaben along with seven food dyes – in school nutrition programs on Aug. 1. The measure would allow exemptions for fundraisers that take place outside of school.
Synthetic food dyes have been linked to neurobehavioral issues in children.
The bill seeks to extend the ban to food and drugs statewide later on, although lawmakers have not settled on a date.
The upper chamber has suggested the ban go into effect Jan. 1, 2028, one year after the date passed by the House.
Senators suggested the move would allow grocers and producers time to adjust.
That change would need to be approved by the House before the bill can advance to the governor’s desk.
