Detroit’s annual Autorama celebrated its 72nd birthday last weekend in the Motor City. “America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show” as it’s become known is the unofficial kick off to the annual driving season here in the Midwest. The annual late winter event gives fastidious owners their first opportunity to show off that winter project.
The highlight of each Detroit Autorama is the Ridler Award given to the best custom car in the show. The award is strictly for cars being shown for the first time. Contenders can’t be previewed online or in print prior to the show. The Ridler is arguably the most prestigious award in hot rodding with many of the participants often costing $1 million or much more to create. As the Ridler contenders are whittled down, they’re first funneled into the Great 8. From there, the annual Ridler winner is selected and formally announced late on Sunday afternoon.

While the overall Corvette car count seemed to be down compared to years past, 2 impressive Corvettes did make it into the Great 8. Both were 1963 split window coupes no less and drew big crowds all weekend. While both cars were amazing, the stunning orange C2 easily would have been our Ridler pick. Alas, neither of the Sting Rays won with the Ridler going to an equally awesome 1956 custom Nomad.
Additional Corvettes were spread throughout the show floor. While most were customized to owners’ individual tastes, we noted a couple stock restored cars like a blue on white 1965 coupe in addition to a fantastic C1 racer. Some of our other favorites included a subtly modded black on blue 1967 coupe and a rare 2018 Carbon 65 convertible. We also loved the classic 1957 black and silver fuelie shown right next to its modded twin in the same display.

Like any car show, it’s always fun to see how owners choose to embellish their already great cars. Autorama is the perfect forum to showcase they’re work. With the 2025 Detroit Autorama in the books, it’s officially time to look towards warmer weather and slowly wake our sleeping beauties from their winter slumber.
