‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ Is The Fastest-Selling Capcom Game Ever: 8 Million Copies, 3 Days

Monster Hunter Wilds is a massive critical and audience success for Capcom, and now we have some numbers to quantify that.

Capcom has revealed that Monster Hunter Wilds is the fastest-selling Capcom game in the history of the company, selling 8 million copies in three days. For comparison, the previous title holder was Resident Evil 4 Remake selling 3 million copies in two days. Even with an extra day, you can understand what a huge difference this is. Previously, Monster Hunter Rise sold 4 million copies in three days back in 2021, half of what we’re seeing here.

Monster Hunter Wilds is a GOTY contender with a 90 score on Metacritic, which almost automatically puts it in contention, and I still have serious doubts about GTA 6 coming out in 2025 as an auto-win. The game has performed phenomenally where we can track exact numbers on Steam, the fifth most-concurrently played in Steam history shortly after launch. The game was released on February 28, and continues to put up over a million players nightly on Steam, usually its second most-played game behind only Counter-Strike 2.

On console, a natural habitat for the game, as the PC version has struggled with some technical issues, and a controller in hand is the best way to play anyway, we are seeing Monster Hunter Wilds surpass even Fortnite on PS5, now the #1 game on that console which even for new releases, is a tall order. And a $70 title, no less. The Xbox chart is much slower to register new games, but a huge debut is expected there once it shows up.

One huge factor here is that Wilds did not have a somewhat baffling Switch-only launch like Rise did, accounting for almost all of this huge sales gap. Day one PC release as well. In terms of player attention, there are in fact other successful games that have released in 2025 so far, but in much different genres from Marvel Rivals to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The next biggest release of the year will be the controversial Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and even if that remains a big series, I don’t think it’s going to match these numbers at all.

Some of this is virality, I think. Everyone on my timeline is posting about playing and even if I wasn’t a video game journalist for a living, it would be enough to get me on the train to at least try out what everyone was talking about. And I know I’m not alone.
