The News-Press and Naples Daily News sports team earned eight national awards in the 2024 Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) Contest, the Oscars of sports writing, as judging concluded last week.

Sports editors and journalists voted on top-10 placements in various categories split into four divisions based on newspaper circulation or digital readership size. Naples Daily News competes in the B Division, and The News-Press competes in the C Division.

The News-Press received five awards, with Dan DeLuca and Dustin Levy each placing in Breaking News, and DeLuca placing in the High School Beat Writing category for a four-story collection of work. The team of DeLuca, Levy, Alex Martin, and Nick Wilson share recognition for Event Coverage for their stories about the 2024 City of Palms Classic at Suncoast Arena. The News-Press also earned recognition in Print Portfolio for a collection of five sports sections selected from 2024.

For the Naples Daily News, Martin earned a Top 10 in the Long Feature category while photographers Jonah Hinebaugh and Ric Rolon were also honored. Hinebaugh received a Top 10 in Action Photo while Rolon did so in Feature Photo.

The exact order of finish in the writing and photo categories will be announced later.  The print category does not rank a Top 10.
