Choosing between heat and food: A harsh reality in Kentuckiana

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — For many families in Kentuckiana, the choice between keeping their homes warm and putting food on the table is a reality. As the cost of living rises, more people are turning to local food pantries for support.

Food pantries across the region are stocked, but supplies are quickly depleted as more individuals and families seek assistance. Dare to Care, a key provider of food to pantries in Kentuckiana, is working to ensure that resources reach those who need them most.

“We want to get the right food out to the right people at the right time,” Alexus Richardson, Dare to Care director of communications emphasized.

To better understand and address the growing need, Dare to Care conducted a survey across 13 counties. Of the more than 2,000 respondents, nearly half reported having to choose between buying food and paying for utilities. Additionally, 65% of those surveyed said they eat less or stretch their meals over several days due to financial constraints.

Recent freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have exacerbated the struggle for many families.

“Can you imagine these days that we had so much snow, below freezing, and you have to choose between heating your home and food? It’s an impossible decision that people are having to make,” Richardson said.

Thanks to a donation from the Humana Foundation, Dare to Care has revamped its website to make finding a food pantry easier than ever. Users can now visit the site, answer three simple questions, and access an interactive map displaying nearby pantries. Additionally, the tool allows users to filter results by availability, ensuring they can find open locations that align with their schedules.

Recognizing that not everyone has easy access to online resources, Dare to Care is exploring alternative methods to connect with those in need, such as text-based assistance and informational flyers.

“We know that this is something that we have to continue working on as things change, technology changes, and everyone has unique needs,” Richardson explained.
