Peoria Area Food Bank prepares for increased demand ahead of changes to SNAP eligibility, benefits

PEORIA (25News Now) – President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” signed on July 4, has changes coming for American citizens, one of which impacts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

The bill will make changes to eligibility and benefit amounts, while also, in some cases, shifting some cost from the federal level to the states.

Last week, Democrats asked if the changes will create a greater need for local food banks and pantries.

“These are going to be some challenging times that we are going to face,” said Peoria Area Food Bank Manager Wayne Cannon.

“The individuals coming to the pantries, those numbers will increase. We just ask our neighbors to continue helping each other. Peoria is a very giving community, and we’re just going to have to benefit or rely on those donations more than we have in the past,” Cannon continued.

He added they have to wait and see for now. There is no word yet on when these changes will be felt at the street level.
