Ohio BMV encourages parents to utilize ‘ID R Kids’ program for child safety this summer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKEF)– The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicle said summer is the perfect time for parents to take advantage of the “ID R Kids” program, which gives minors state issued IDs. Dayton 24/7 Now’s, Kysha Hancock caught up with the Ohio BMV who said this is extremely helpful to keep your children safe.

“It’s been in place for years now, but I think its underutilized certainly,” said Charlie Norman, Ohio BMV registrar.

Norman said right now, 80,000 Ohio children 15 years old and under already have a state ID, but they want to see that number grow. Norman told Hancock, they hope working together with the Ohio School Safety Center will bring more awareness and educate parents on why the ‘ID R Kids’ program is so important.

“Certainly, in emergency situations it assists law enforcement in the event your child goes missing, gives them instant access to photos and identifying information,” said Norman.

Norman also told Hancock, these IDs provide an extra layer of security when families are traveling and are even useful when minors apply for summer jobs, open bank accounts or sign up for other summer programs.

He said the process of getting your child an ID is as easy as getting your adult state ID.

“They got to provide proof of full legal name, date of birth, social security number…citizenship.” They go through the whole id process, there’s a photo, you have to sign the little pin ad with their name, and they’ll be issued a state ID just like an adult would,” said Norman.

Norman added getting these state issued IDs for your children now, can make it easier for them to get their ID when they become an adult.

There is a $10 fee for the ‘ID R Kids’ program. For more information on the process, you can visit the Ohio BMV’s website.
