AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Summer time in the CSRA means former local athletes are back in town to give back to their own.
This past weekend, Evans standout Derrick Canteen was in town for his fifth annual football camp.
Now, Cross Creek’s Jordyn Dorsey is back in Augusta hosting her second annual basketball camp.
Kids, ages 6-12, spent Monday morning learning the fundamentals of the game in downtown’s Kroc Center.
“We went through some skills and drills, some ball handling techniques, and then regular scrimmages,” said Dorsey.
In 2024, the camp was a huge hit for her, bringing in dozens of local youth.
She says if that continues, then the camp will remain a staple of her summer schedule.
“The biggest thing for me is just having retention,” she said. “Having kids that are excited to come back makes me excited to come back and be with them, and hang with the coaches.”
Among the coaches at this year’s camp were some of Dorsey’s friends, as well as another Augusta basketball legend.
“We had Will Avery come back and speak to the kids,” she said. “He’s a former Duke player and former NBA player, but of course he’s huge in the CSRA as well.”
After being named Player of the Year during her senior year at Cross Creek, Dorsey took her talents to North Carolina A&T.
She just finished her final season as an Aggie, but says she’s not ready to stop being a student-athlete.
“I’m really not ready to put the ball down just yet,” she said. “While I’m in dental school, I’ll still be practicing and training in my free-time to try and make it professionally.”
So, while she’s learning how to drill teeth, you’ll still find her running drills for herself, or the kids that have dreams just like she did.
Dorsey’s camp will continue on Tuesday, running from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m.
