As families gear up for summer fun, local doctors are reminding parents to take extra precautions during hot weather, especially after the recent heatwave that gave many a preview of what’s ahead.
Dr. James Saperstone of CapitalCare Pediatrics in Guilderland emphasizes the importance of being mindful of sun exposure, heat safety, and hydration, particularly for younger children.
“Remember, tan skin is damaged skin,” Dr. Saperstone said. “Be vigilant about sunscreen and protective clothing. And when it comes to heat illness, hydration is everything—even if your child says they’re not thirsty.”
He also emphasized the importance of pool safety, noting that children with limited swimming skills should be closely supervised.
For active kids involved in outdoor sports, Dr. Saperstone recommends watching for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dry skin, lack of sweating, or excessive body temperature. He also suggests electrolyte-rich drinks on extremely hot days.
Parents of children with asthma or other medical conditions are advised to continue their medication and closely monitor their symptoms during the summer months.
With a few precautions, experts say families can enjoy a safe and healthy summer season.
