MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) – Monday is the final day of our Toppling Hunger cereal drive. We need your help to make sure kids get breakfast this summer.
Fifteen nonprofits across Northeast Wisconsin will benefit from this collection at the WBAY Building and Fox Communities Credit Union locations. They’re partners with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
One of those is Grow It Forward in Manitowoc.
The founder, Amber Daugs, started the nonprofit after her experience being homeless about 25 years ago. She tells us she relied on food pantries to get by before she was able to save enough money for an apartment.
Many apartments in her budget didn’t come with a stove or hot plate or even a refrigerator. She says she used to keep her cold food between two window sills, so ready-to-eat foods, like cereal, were a lifesaver.
“It allows me to have empathy for individuals who are going through struggles in their lives. and also not do so with judgment. We know for many the pantry is just a stepping stone to stability in their life, whatever that may look like for others. This is their lifeline for food that they need on a continual basis,” Daugs said.
More than 50 percent of the student body in Manitowoc’s public school district are in food insecure or low-income households, so this will make a big difference in the community for families needing a little support.
“The importance for us, for this pantry, is to make sure we do have enough ready-to-eat food, and one of those ways is by having cereal. It’s a nutritious item for folks who may not have access otherwise, and there is a growing unhoused population growing in our community, so we know that’s incredibly important,” Daugs said.
Donations can be dropped off until 5 p.m.
The Action 2 News This Morning show team is taking shifts collecting donations at the curb from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. outside the WBAY Building, 115 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Green Bay.
