12-year-old organizes food drive in Brewer

BREWER, Maine (WABI) – Food insecurity is a problem faced by thousands in the state of Maine – and one kid from Brewer is helping to combat that.

12-year-old Dorian Pillsbury, or D-Max, as he’s known, set up a “Pack the Pantry” food drive outside of the Paradis Shop N’ Save in Brewer.

Visitors could donate cereal and some non-perishable goods to help ensure that nobody in their community goes hungry.

D-Max’s charity work began as a way to help get food to his classmates in need.

He’s since hosted a multitude of other charity events, including some in partnership with local businesses.

D-Max’s Pack the Pantry is one of several fundraisers occurring at the same time – a charity competition between Brewer and seven other towns.

D-Max tells us that the biggest motivation for his work is just getting to help the people of his community.

“This means the world to me, actually. Because I get to fundraise and have fun, and help out the community – and also help out seven others at the same time. And that puts a smile on my face,” said Pillsbury.

D-Max began Pack the Pantry with the goal of collecting 300 cereal boxes.

The event concluded with over 600, to be donated to the Brewer Food Pantry.
