WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Waco Children’s Theatre will complete its 36th year inspiring kids and teenagers in Waco.
Every year in June, the organization holds a month-long acting summer camp. Kids and teens rehearse popular works of theatre. They perform them at the end of the month.
This year, the younger kids are performing The Lion King. The teenagers are performing Legally Blonde.
Hayden Scott, 19, has attended the camp since he was seven years old. Since he recently graduated high school, this is his final performance.
“We’re like a family,” Scott said. “Sometimes in the worst ways but most of the time in the best ways.”
Scott began his journey with Waco Children’s Theatre less than excited about acting. Now he said the program has given him a sense of self.
“To have something that I am good at and enjoy and something that other people acknowledge me for, it might sound a bit selfish but it makes me like myself a lot,” Scott said.
He said the programs director, Linda Haskett, helped him achieve his potential.
“They’re my kids,” Haskett said. “I share them with their parents but I get very attached to them when they’re here from nine to nine day in and day out.”
She wants kids to leave her program confident in themselves.
“Don’t worry about the money, just go share your bliss,” Haskett said.
Their final show of the year is Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on their website.
