THE TOP STORIES WE’RE FOLLOWING TODAY. KERNERSVILLE POLICE SAY TWO PEOPLE ARE IN THE HOSPITAL THIS MORNING AFTER A SHOOTING AT THE FOOD LION ON SOUTH MAIN STREET. HERE’S A LOOK AT THAT SCENE. AUTHORITIES SAY THE SHOOTING HAPPENED AROUND 7:00 LAST NIGHT. ONE OF THE VICTIMS WAS HIT IN THE FOOT. THE OTHER WAS HIT IN THE LEG. FORTUNATELY, THEY’RE BOTH EXPECTED TO RECOVER. KERNERSVILLE POLICE SAY THIS IS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND THERE IS NO DANGER TO THE PUBLIC. WINSTON-SALEM POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A DEADLY SHOOTING INVOLVING TWO OF ITS OFFICERS AROUND 6:00 LAST NIGHT. AUTHORITIES RESPONDED TO A CALL AT THIS SCENE ON NANCY LANE. CHIEF WILLIAM PENN SAYS OFFICERS WERE TRYING TO ARREST 34 YEAR OLD ANTONIO BENTANCOURT DURING THE ARREST. HE PULLED OUT A GUN AND SHOT ONE OF THE OFFICERS, STRIKING THEIR BULLETPROOF VEST. A SECOND OFFICER THEN RETURNED FIRE, KILLING BENTANCOURT. THE COP WHO WAS SHOT IS EXPECTED TO RECOVER. AND A LITTLE PIECE OF GOOD NEWS FOR THE WESTERN PART OF OUR STATE, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS A SECTION OF I-40 NEAR THE TENNESSEE STATE LINE HAS REOPENED ONE WEEK EARLIER THAN EXPECTED. MAJOR FLOODING CAUSED A ROCKSLIDE THAT DAMAGED THE ROAD JUST OVER A WEEK AGO. CREWS INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE CLOSED INTO UNTIL JULY 3RD. NO DOUBT THAT THIS WEEK HAS BEEN A SCORCHER. A man was taken into custody after a shooting at a Food Lion, according to the Kernersville Police Department.On Saturday, police said Lee Donnell Smith Jr, 39, was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, discharging a firearm from within an enclosure with the intent to harm or incite fear, and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling.Authorities said they responded to a shots-fired call around 7 p.m. Friday at the Food Lion on S Main Street.When officers arrived, they said they found two victims with gunshot wounds. One of the victims, a 32-year-old man, was shot in the foot. The other victim, a 32-year-old woman, was shot in the lower leg. Both were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.The Food Lion closed in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.According to investigators, this was an isolated incident, and there is no danger to the public.Kernersville Police Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office SWAT teams assisted in taking Lee Donnell Smith Jr into custody.
