CAMP SHELBY, Miss. (WDAM) – More than one hundred children from all over Mississippi have just wrapped up a unique summer camp that features swimming and arts and crafts, along with rides on Army vehicles and lots of marching.
“I’ve liked everything about it,” said A.J. Lee, 12, a camper, from Moselle. “I’ve made a lot of good friends, I like the activities we did.”
The camp was all part of the 33rd annual Kids A.T. (Annual Training), hosted by the Mississippi National Guard.
The week-long camp is just for children of National Guard members.
“It was just loud, fun, chaotic,” said Emma Thomas, 12, a camper from Meridian. “I know I’m going to miss everybody.
“I’ve made so many friends here and I’ve come back each year and it’s gotten better each year.”
The goal of the Kids A.T. is to give campers a better understanding of what their moms and dads do as they serve in the military.
Saturday was graduation day for the camp.
“They have barrack inspections, they march, they get to ride on a (Bradley Fighting Vehicle), they see flyovers, they do a lot of things that are military, give them a glimpse at what military life it like,” Camp director Michela Haggerty said.
Kids A.T. drew 116 campers this year.
