‘I love what I do’: Columbia food truck owners reflect on National Food Truck Day

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Friday is National Food Truck Day, a day dedicated to supporting the men and women behind the food industry on wheels.

Local food truck owners in Columbia are using the day to reflect on their success in the business.

“It’s a lot of work,” said Bill Hanti, owner of Smokin’ Pot.

He’s owned his food truck, Smokin’ Pot, for 5 years and specializes in Middle Eastern food. The majority of his food is made in a clay pot oven on his truck.

“I love what I do. On a day like today, I’m working a double,” he said.

VonGretchen Donawald, owner of Bessie’s Bites and Sweet Delights, said her passion is what’s kept her food truck rolling.

“This business, it’s hard work, you know, and just being dedicated to the long days, heavy lifting, employee turnover, everything embodies being here today to celebrate National Food Truck Day,” she said.

Here in the City of Columbia alone, there are 141 active Food Truck licenses.

This is Joseph Cole’s first year owning his food truck, Fishers of Men. He said that despite facing new challenges, he plans to continue growing his business.

“It’s very exciting just to be a food truck vendor. Trying to get here, I had kinds of obstacles, but I was willing to push through,” he said.

Even though National Food Truck Day is once a year, the City of Columbia hosts Food Truck Friday every Friday

The food trucks are set up each Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2300 Bull Street.
