It might just be the worst kept secret in Manteca.
Manteca is getting a third Save Mart
And its going in the Marketplace at Main on the southwest corner of South Main Street and Atherton Drive.
The supermarket and accompanying shopping center is on the City of Manteca Community Development’s project list as “under construction/ready to build” meaning the building permits have been issued.
The commercial project list for June also notes the city’s fifth McDonald’s restaurant — that also is part of the Marketplace at Main — is entitled but not yet under construction.
Now, it will be a race to see who will have the distinction of being the first supermarket south of the 120 Bypass.
The contenders are Save Mart, whose founders started in the grocery business in a small store in Lincoln Center on West Yosemite Avenue in the 1950s where Hafer’s Furniture is located today, and Food-4-Less.
Food 4-Less is breaking ground on Thursday, July 24, at 10 a.m. on their second Manteca location on Atherton Drive west of Airport Way in the Manteca Crossing center where Chick-Fil-A and Dutch Bros both have opened.
It is also the second location for both concerns.
The space for the Save Mart supermarket at Atherton and Main is 40,000 square feet.
The junior anchor building is larger at 45,000 square feet.
The 18.4 acre project also has 25,000 square feet in additional retail and dining space.
It includes three freestanding fast food-style restaurants with drive-thru lanes, a car wash, and two separate areas for small retail stores.
At Manteca Crossing, a Maverik gas station is now under construction with 14 fueling stations, 8 commercial fueling stations, and a 6,140-square-foot convenience store with 38 parking spaces.
There is 47,200 square feet of additional retail and restaurant space being built.
Also coming is a four-story, 117-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel that is planned for the west of the Food-4-Less.
